The markets, and what each one costs you
The point spread is the main market. One team gives points, the other receives them, and both sides are usually priced at -110. That number is the whole game. At -110 you are risking 110 to win 100, so you need to be right 52.38 percent of the time simply to break even. Not 50. The extra 2.38 points is the margin.
Add the two sides together and you can see it directly. Two lines at -110 imply 52.38 percent each, which totals 104.76 percent. Anything above 100 is the cost of the market itself.
The moneyline drops the points and asks only who wins. Short prices on heavy favourites look safe and are not. A team at -400 needs to win 80 percent of the time to break even, and NFL favourites of that size lose several times a season.
Totals price the combined score over or under a number. Player props price passing yards, rushing yards, receptions, touchdowns and more. Futures price division winners, conference winners and the championship months in advance, which is exactly where crypto volatility matters most: a ticket bought in September settles in February, and the coin you bought it with will not be worth the same then.
The key numbers, 3 and 7
American football is scored in threes and sevens, so margins of victory cluster on those numbers far more than on any other. Roughly one NFL game in seven finishes with a three point margin.
That is why a spread of -2.5 and a spread of -3.5 are not close to the same bet, even though they are one point apart on paper. Moving off 3 in either direction is the single most valuable line movement in the sport, and it is why books price the half point around 3 so aggressively. The same logic applies at 7, with less force.

What the price is telling you about the game
Read a price backwards and it becomes a probability. A -250 favourite is the market saying 71.4 percent. A +200 underdog is 33.3 percent. Add both and you get 104.7, and that extra 4.7 points is the margin again.
One thing worth knowing, because it runs against instinct: lopsided games usually carry more margin, not less. Priced across our own board, evenly matched fixtures tend to land around 105 percent while heavy mismatches run closer to 106.5. The game that looks like free money is the one where you are paying the most to play.
College football is the bigger board
NCAA football carries more priced markets here than the NFL does, and the 2026 season starts earlier than most people expect. Week 0 falls on Saturday 29 August, with Week 1 running from Thursday 3 September through Monday 7 September.
College spreads are wider and stranger than NFL ones. Mismatches of thirty points and more are routine, because the talent gap between a playoff contender and a non conference opponent has no NFL equivalent. Totals run higher. Line movement on a Tuesday means something different than it does in the NFL, where the injury report is formalised and public.
