What it doesn't carry is anything that says it came from you.
Two things to paste, into two separate boxes: the address in one, the tag in the other. Glance at both before you hit send, because autofill has a habit of mashing them together.
Exchanges can't agree on what to call it. You'll see Tag, Destination Tag or Memo, and they all mean this number.
No tag field anywhere? Then it's the wrong wallet for this deposit. Move the XRP to one that has one first.
First time? Send a few dollars' worth, watch it land, then send the rest.
Already sent without the tag? Contact support with the transaction hash straight away. Whether it can be matched depends on the case, which is exactly why the test deposit is worth the extra minute.
Speed and fees on the XRP Ledger
The ledger closes a new version every three to five seconds, and the standard fee is 0.00001 XRP, so the cost of a deposit doesn't grow with its size. In practice, most of the time you wait is the exchange processing your withdrawal, not the network.
One quirk worth knowing: every XRP address has to hold a reserve to exist, currently 1 XRP on the main network. Bets and balances show in dollars, so a $25 stake is $25 whether you funded it with XRP or anything else. XRP's price is the part that moves. Here's the catch with a brand-new wallet: until it's been funded, it doesn't exist on the ledger, and the payment that creates it has to be at least the 1 XRP reserve. Send comfortably more than that the first time. Check the address twice, too. Once a payment's on the ledger, nobody can reverse it, us included.
