Toluca meet Monterrey in the Leagues Cup final on Sunday 6 September. Both semi-final results, why the draw still pays in a knockout, and where to bet it.
Toluca play Monterrey on Sunday 6 September for the Leagues Cup, and whatever happens the trophy goes back to Mexico. All four semi-finalists came from Liga MX. That has never happened before in the modern era of this competition, and it means the MLS half of a bracket built specifically to pit the two leagues against each other was swept clean before the last weekend.
Below is the final, how both semi-finals actually went, the route each club took, and the one quirk of the points system that still catches people out when they read a Leagues Cup table.
The final: Toluca v Monterrey, Sunday 6 September
Toluca arrive as the reigning Concacaf Champions Cup holders, which makes them the closest thing this final has to a favourite on form. Monterrey arrive having won a shootout that they were losing on the run of play for long stretches.
The third place match is played the same day, so America and Leon meet again in the consolation fixture. That match matters more than a consolation usually does, and the reason is in the qualification section further down.
Nobody had published a kick-off time or a venue when this went up. Both semi-finals were played in the United States rather than Mexico, Houston and Los Angeles, so a neutral American ground is the safe assumption. Check the board rather than this paragraph once the fixture appears on it.
How the semi-finals went
Toluca 2-0 Leon, Shell Energy Stadium, Houston. Pereira got the first just before half time, a header from a corner. Vinas made it two on 69, finishing off the sort of counterattack Leon had been inviting for a while. Then it turned untidy. Jhohan Romana walked for Leon on 75, and Bruno Mendez followed him down the tunnel on 89.
You will see this written up as Toluca beating a ten man Leon. Check the clock on that claim. Both goals were scored before Romana walked, and Toluca finished with ten men of their own. Leon went down to ten while already two behind, which is a consequence of the scoreline rather than a cause of it.
America 2-2 Monterrey, Monterrey through 5-4 on penalties, Dignity Health Sports Park, Los Angeles. Diego Rossi struck first on 48. Ramon Juarez hauled America level on 57, Alan Cervantes put them in front six minutes after that, and for about ten minutes it looked done. Then Lucas Ocampos levelled it again from the spot on 68. Nothing came of the last twenty minutes, and that was that.
Straight to kicks, and that phrase is doing real work. There is no extra time in this competition at the knockout stage. None at all. Ninety minutes and then the spot.
How the four of them got there
The quarter-finals were the round that emptied the MLS side of the draw:

Leon 3-0 Real Salt Lake, with Daniel Arcila the pick of them
America 2-0 Columbus Crew
Monterrey 2-1 Chicago Fire, settled by Orbelin Pineda
Leon came into the semi-final unbeaten against MLS opposition across four matches, which is the sort of run that reads better before a semi-final than after one.
How the Leagues Cup table works
Thirty six clubs go in. That is every one of the 18 Liga MX sides, plus the 18 MLS clubs that made last season's playoffs. Three group matches each, always against a club from the other league, and you cannot be drawn against a domestic rival until the quarter-finals.
The scoring is where people get caught out. There are no draws in this competition, so the points table has four outcomes rather than three:
Win in regulation: 3 points
Win on penalties: 2 points
Lose on penalties: 1 point
Lose in regulation: 0 points
Read that twice, because the consequence is not obvious. Two clubs can play out an identical 90 minutes, finish level, and walk away separated by a single point decided by a shootout that had no bearing on anything either team did in the match itself.
The top four from each table went through, and quarter-final seeding was fixed and cross-league: MLS 1 against Liga MX 4, MLS 2 against Liga MX 3, and so on down.
One warning for anyone reading a published table: the tiebreakers are not consistent between sources. The competition's own guide lists goal difference first and then wins. Other summaries lead with regulation wins. Those two orderings produce different results among clubs level on points, so treat any ordering you see as provisional.
The draw is priced in a competition that has no draws
This is the part almost nobody explains, and in a final it matters more than it did in August.
The three-way match market on our soccer board settles on 90 minutes. So in a knockout tie the draw selection is not a prediction that the match ends level and stays level. It is a prediction that the match reaches the shootout. Someone will lift the trophy on Sunday, and the draw can still win.
A shootout is really two separate events wearing one result. The 90 minutes is one contest and the kicks are another, and the second one has close to no relationship with the first. America found that out on Wednesday.
What a three-way market costs you
Every price carries a margin, and you can measure it yourself without taking anyone's word for it. Convert each of the three prices to an implied probability by dividing 1 by the decimal odds, then add the three together. A market with no margin would total 100 per cent. Anything above that is the book's cut.
Measured across the Leagues Cup three-way markets on our own board earlier in the tournament, those totals ran a little over 106 per cent. Six points, give or take, is the cost of the market itself, and it is charged whether your selection wins or loses.
There is a second effect worth knowing. A lopsided match costs more than a close one. When one side is priced at a short number, the margin sits disproportionately on that short price, so backing a heavy favourite in a three-way market is usually the most expensive thing on the coupon per unit of expected return. None of this is an argument against betting the final. It is an argument for knowing what you are paying before you pay it.
What the winner actually gets
Three places in the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup come out of this tournament, and they go to both finalists and to the winner of the third place match. Toluca and Monterrey have theirs already. That is why America against Leon on Sunday is not a dead rubber: the last Champions Cup place is on it.
The Champions Cup is the route toward the FIFA Club World Cup and the Intercontinental Cup, so a place in it is worth considerably more than the prize money attached to finishing third in a summer competition.
