The favourite was not the answer

It is tempting to read that as the market failing. It is not. A 10 per cent chance is supposed to happen one time in ten, and this was that time. If long shots never landed, they would not be priced as long shots, they would be priced at zero and no book would take the bet. The market said Philadelphia was unlikely. Philadelphia was unlikely. Unlikely things arrive on schedule, roughly one in ten of the time, and no amount of reporting changes that arithmetic in advance.

The useful lesson is the one nobody enjoys: a favourite losing is not evidence that the price was wrong. It is usually just evidence that the favourite was a favourite and not a certainty.

Add the margin on top. Across a full championship market the implied chances of every team add up to well over 100 per cent, and the amount over is what the market costs to enter. On a field as wide as an NBA title race that overround is larger than it is on a two way market like a single game, because there are far more prices to build it into. Futures are one of the more expensive things on any board, which is worth knowing before the story convinces you otherwise.

An eleven month hold, and what that means in crypto
