Tennis Betting Guide: Odds, Markets and the 2026 US Open
How tennis betting works at the 2026 US Open: match odds, set betting, games handicaps, and why Sinner's withdrawal is a lesson in futures markets.
Tennis never gives the book a day off. The tour plays eleven months of the year across four surfaces, and right now the biggest hard court event of the lot is halfway through. The 2026 US Open runs from Sunday 30 August to Sunday 13 September at Flushing Meadows, and our tennis board carries it alongside the women's draw and a rolling list of Challenger events, so there is a live market at almost any hour.
This guide covers how tennis betting actually works: the two outcome structure, the markets worth understanding, the traps that quietly cost money, and what the current US Open board is telling you if you read it honestly.
Two outcomes and a margin
A tennis match cannot end level. Two players walk on, one walks off a winner, and there is no draw to price. That makes tennis the cleanest market in this whole sportsbook to analyse, because there are only two numbers to add up.
Here is the check, and you can run it on any match on the board in about ten seconds. Divide 1 by each of the two decimal prices, then add the results. A market with no margin would total 100 per cent. Everything above that is what the market costs you.
Five US Open matches priced on our board on 3 September, run through that arithmetic:
Zverev 1.16 against Halys at 5.40. Add them: 104.7 per cent, and nothing else here comes cheaper
Auger-Aliassime at 1.35 with Khachanov at 3.20 pushes it up to 105.3
de Minaur at 1.21 with Van de Zandschulp out at 4.40 gives you 105.4
Zheng 1.34 and Putintseva 3.25 comes to the same 105.4, which is coincidence rather than rule
Gauff 1.14, Badosa 5.60, and this is the priciest of the five at 105.6
So roughly five points, charged whether you win or lose. Notice which one is cheapest: the most lopsided match on the list. That cuts against the usual assumption, and it is worth knowing that the relationship between how one sided a match looks and what the market charges is not as tidy as people expect.
The markets that matter
Match winner. The straight pick. Clean, but favourites in best of three tennis lose more often than their prices suggest to anyone who has not watched much of it.
Set betting. You are calling the scoreline in sets here, 2-0 or 2-1 or whatever it turns into. Odds run longer than the match line for an obvious reason: you are pricing the shape of the thing, not merely who wins it.
Games handicap. The tennis version of the point spread. Backing a favourite at minus 4.5 games means they need to win by five games across the match, which is a different question from whether they win at all.
Total games. Over or under a posted line, say 21.5 games. A serve dominated match and a grinding baseline match produce very different totals from the same two names.
First set winner. Useful when you know a player starts fast or notoriously does not.
Outright winner. The futures market on a whole tournament, and the one that needs the most care. The section below explains why.
The 2026 US Open, and a favourite who never turned up
The main draw opened on Sunday 30 August. Women's final, Saturday 12 September. Men's, the Sunday after. The prize pot is a record this year at 108 million dollars: win either singles title and 5.5 million of it is yours, lose the final and you still walk away with 2.8 million.
Alcaraz is back to defend the men's title. He is seeded second, which takes a moment to get used to. Sabalenka defends hers from the top seeding, the more usual arrangement of the two. That gap, defending champion but not top seed, is the whole story of the men's draw this year, and it pays to understand it before you look at a single outright price.
The reason is a knee. Jannik Sinner, the world number one, pulled out on 21 August with a right knee injury, and everybody behind him moved up a place. Zverev inherited the top seeding, Alcaraz took second, Djokovic climbed with them.
Now read what that does to an earlier version of this page. In late July our own US Open outright market had Sinner at 31/50 and Alcaraz at 9/5, with nobody else shorter than Zverev at 8/1. Sinner was the shortest price on the board by a distance. He has not hit a ball in this tournament.
Nothing went wrong with that price. It was an honest read of the information available in July. But it is the clearest demonstration you will get of something worth internalising before you back any futures market: an outright ticket bought weeks out is exposed to everything that can happen to a person in those weeks, and injury is only the most obvious item on that list. A match line is a bet on a match. A futures ticket is a bet on availability, form, the draw, and roughly a fortnight of luck.
What a first round exit teaches
Frances Tiafoe went into the 2026 DC Open in Washington as the local favourite and lost in the first round to Terence Atmane. Taylor Fritz ended up lifting the trophy, beating Rafael Jodar 7-6, 6-4 in a final that rain had pushed back to the Monday.
Nothing about that is unusual, and that is exactly the point. Best of three tennis is brutal on favourites. One break of serve in a first set, one tight tiebreak, and the better player is out with no time to correct it. If you take heavy favourites on the match line over and over, you are paying the margin calculated above on every single one of them while the format works quietly against you.
The traps that cost real money
Retirements. Players pull out mid match all the time, and settlement rules differ by market. Some books void, some settle on completed sets, and the rule you assumed applies is not always the rule that does. Read the terms on the specific market before the ball is in play, not after somebody's back goes.
Live betting latency. Courtside data moves faster than any stream or broadcast. If you are betting in play off a feed, you are reacting to a point that has already been priced by somebody watching it happen. That delay is not a small edge against you.
Best of five changes the maths. The men play best of five at the four majors and best of three everywhere else. Five sets gives the better player more time to recover from a bad start, so a favourite's true chance at the US Open is genuinely higher than the same matchup would be in Cincinnati. The women play best of three throughout, so that adjustment does not apply to their draw at all. Applying a best of three instinct to a men's major is one of the most common errors in tennis betting.

One thing is specific to tennis and worth a sentence. Outright tickets on a major sit open for a fortnight.
