How Long Is a Football Game? NFL and College Answered
An NFL game takes about three hours ten minutes for 60 minutes of clock. Quarter length, halftime, overtime, and why college runs a few minutes longer.
An NFL game lasts about three hours and ten minutes from kickoff to final whistle, even though the game clock only runs for 60 minutes. A college football game usually takes a few minutes longer. That is the short answer, and if you are planning an evening, blocking out three to three and a half hours covers almost every game you will ever watch.
The longer answer, including why 60 minutes of clock becomes three hours of watching, what halftime and overtime add, and what game length means if you have a bet running, is below.
The clock structure: four quarters of 15 minutes
Both the NFL and college football play four 15-minute quarters, so the game clock holds exactly 60 minutes of football. Between the second and third quarters sits halftime: listed at 13 minutes in the NFL and 20 minutes in college. Add a short break between the other quarters and the structural time comes to roughly an hour and a half. The rest of a broadcast is the clock stopping.
Why 60 minutes takes three hours
The game clock stops constantly, and the reasons stack up fast:
Incomplete passes stop the clock until the next snap.
A player going out of bounds stops it late in each half.
Scores, turnovers and possession changes each trigger a stoppage, and most trigger a TV break too.
Each team carries three timeouts per half, and coaches burn them deliberately at the end of close games.
Replay reviews, injuries, penalties and measurements add unscheduled pauses.
Count it all and a typical NFL broadcast contains around 11 minutes of the ball actually being in play, wrapped in about three hours and ten minutes of television. The last two minutes of a close half are the extreme case: with incompletions, timeouts and sideline throws, two minutes of clock routinely takes a quarter of an hour to play.
College vs NFL game length
College games have historically run longer, mainly because college rules stopped the clock after every first down. Recent rule changes trimmed that, and the clock now keeps running on first downs outside the final two minutes of each half, which has pulled the average college game to within a few minutes of the NFL's. The 20-minute halftime, marching bands included, is most of the remaining difference. Call it three hours and a quarter as a planning figure.
Overtime can add most of an hour
A tied game extends, and the two codes handle it very differently:
NFL regular season: one 10-minute overtime period, and both teams are now guaranteed a possession. If it is still tied afterwards, the game ends as a tie. Adds roughly 20 to 40 minutes of real time.
NFL playoffs: no ties allowed. Teams play 15-minute periods until someone wins.
College: alternating possessions from the opponent's 25-yard line. From the second overtime a touchdown must be followed by a two-point try, and from the third the teams simply trade two-point attempts, which ends games quickly but can stretch a classic past four hours.
Planning around the TV windows
Game length is easier to use once you attach it to start times. NFL Sundays run in three waves: the early window at 1 p.m. ET wraps up a little after 4, the late-afternoon window at 4:05 or 4:25 finishes around 7:30, and the night game at 8:20 lands near 11:30. Thursday and Monday night games follow the same three-hour arc. College Saturdays stack from noon ET past midnight, four rounds of kickoffs deep, so there is a game ending somewhere in almost every hour of the day.
The Super Bowl is the one scheduled exception to everything above: an extended halftime show and pre-game ceremony push it toward four hours, so plan accordingly in February.
What game length means for a bet
If you bet a spread, total or moneyline before kickoff, you are opening a position that stays live for about three hours and ten minutes, and everything in this guide is your holding period. Live markets reprice on every scoring drive and every long stoppage, which is exactly why late timeouts and two-minute drills produce the wildest odds swings of the week. The American football board at Jacks Club carries NFL, NCAA and CFL markets, pre-game and in-play, and if you are new to reading them our NFL betting guide covers spreads, totals and moneylines with worked examples.
When the games actually start
The 2026 slates are set: college football opens with Week 0 on Saturday, August 29, 2026, covered date by date in our guide to when the college football season starts, and the NFL follows with its opener on Thursday, September 10, 2026, mapped out in when the NFL season starts. Preseason football is already running, with the exhibition schedule in our NFL preseason guide.
Common questions
How long is halftime in football?
13 minutes in the NFL and 20 minutes in college football. The Super Bowl is the exception: its halftime show stretches the break to around half an hour.
How long is a high school football game?
Quarters drop to 12 minutes, so the clock holds 48 minutes and most games finish in two to two and a half hours.
How much actual play happens in a football game?
Around 11 minutes of live ball in a typical NFL game. The sport is built from short bursts, roughly 130 to 160 plays of about five seconds each, separated by resets.
Can a football game end early?
Only weather or emergency can shorten one. Barring that, all 60 minutes get played, however long they take, which is why a bet on the game is a three-hour commitment rather than a 60-minute one.
