Set handicap. Usually -1.5 or +1.5. A team at -1.5 must win by two clear sets, meaning 3-0 or 3-1. A team at +1.5 covers if they win at all, or lose 3-2. This is where most of the value sits when one side is heavily favoured.

Correct set score. Pick the exact result from those six outcomes. Longer odds, and more predictable than it sounds once you know how the two teams match up.

Total points. Over or under a line for the whole match. Long matches that go to five sets blow past the line, so this is partly a bet on whether the match is close.

First set winner. A short market that avoids the risk of a team collapsing late.

Player props. Points, aces and blocks for individual players where offered.

Reading volleyball odds

Odds are just the price of an outcome. In decimal, multiply your stake by the number for your total return: 1.80 turns a 10 stake into 18 back. In American odds, a favourite at -150 means staking 150 to win 100, while an underdog at +180 returns 180 profit on a 100 stake.

A useful habit in volleyball specifically: check the set handicap price against the match winner price. If a favourite is very short to win the match, the -1.5 set line often pays considerably better for what is only a slightly harder outcome, because dominant volleyball teams frequently win 3-0 or 3-1 rather than grinding to five.

The Volleyball Nations League, and how its season works

The VNL is the main annual competition and it runs from June into early August every year. Eighteen national teams in each of the men's and women's tournaments play a group phase across several host cities before a final round.

In 2026 the women's tournament ran from 3 June to 26 July, with its final round at the Macau East Asian Games Dome in China. The men's ran from 10 June to 2 August, finishing at the Beilun Gymnasium in Ningbo.

Poland went into the 2026 men's edition as defending champions and came out of it the same way, beating the United States in five sets in the final on 2 August, with Slovenia taking bronze. Turkey won the women's title on 26 July, coming from a set down to beat Brazil. France arrived as reigning Olympic champions and Italy as reigning world champions, which is why the men's final round carried such depth at the top.

Beyond the VNL, the domestic seasons in Italy, Poland, Turkey and Brazil carry strong markets through the winter, and beach volleyball runs its own tour in summer. Between them there is something to bet on most weeks of the year.

Things worth knowing before you bet

Home advantage is real. Crowd noise affects serving and receiving more in volleyball than in most sports, and it shows up in results.

Serving decides sets. A team with a strong serving run can take a set from four points down in minutes. This is why volleyball favourites lose individual sets far more often than they lose matches, and why set handicaps are priced the way they are.

Rotation and rest matter in tournaments. During a long group phase, teams already qualified will rest key players. Check lineups before betting a match that looks like a mismatch on paper.

Men's and women's volleyball are different games. The men's game is faster and more serve dominated, the women's game has longer rallies. Totals lines reflect this, so do not carry assumptions from one across to the other.
