How Long Is a Soccer Game? Halves, Stoppage Time and Bets

A soccer game is 90 minutes in two 45-minute halves, plus stoppage time and a halftime of up to 15 minutes. Extra time, penalties and what counts for a bet.

Ninety minutes, in two halves of 45, with up to 15 minutes of halftime in the middle. That's a professional soccer game on paper. In practice it's longer. The referee tacks stoppage time onto both halves, and most matches end up close to two hours from kick-off to final whistle.
There's more to it than that, though. Stoppage time has its own logic, knockout games can run to extra time and penalties, other levels play shorter halves, and if you've got a bet on, the big question is which minutes actually count. We'll take those one at a time.
Two halves of 45 minutes
Two equal halves of 45 minutes: that's what the Laws of the Game say. And unlike basketball or American football, the clock doesn't stop. Injury, substitution, a five-minute row with the referee, it keeps ticking through all of it. The referee then claws that time back at the end of each half.
Halftime can be up to 15 minutes under the Laws. At the top level, teams use pretty much every second of it for team talks and changes.
Stoppage time
Stoppage time goes by a few names (added time, injury time), but it's the same thing: the referee's estimate of how much time got lost in that half. Subs, injuries, goal celebrations, video reviews and time-wasting all count toward it. When the half is nearly up, the fourth official holds up a board with a number on it. That number is a minimum. If more time gets lost, the referee can keep playing past it.
It's been getting longer, too. Over the last few seasons competitions have pushed referees to measure lost time more precisely, so several minutes on the board at the end of a half is perfectly normal now. That's a big part of why matches so often run close to two hours.
Extra time and penalties
A league game is allowed to finish level. A knockout tie isn't. If it's still tied after 90 minutes, most competitions go to extra time: two more halves, 15 minutes each, with a short break between.
Still level after that? Penalties. Each side takes five, alternating. Five each and still even? Then it's sudden death: one kick apiece, and the first time one side scores while the other misses, it's over. Not every competition bothers with extra time, mind you. Some go straight to penalties, so it's worth checking the rules of whichever tournament you're watching.
How long other games last
MLS and the big European leagues: 90 minutes plus added time, the same as international football.
US college soccer: two halves of 45 minutes as well.
US high school soccer: usually two 40-minute halves under the national federation's rules, though some states change that.
Youth soccer: shorter, depending on the age group and on whoever runs the league.
Which minutes count for a bet
This is the bit that ends a lot of arguments. Standard soccer markets settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Nothing after.
1x2, double chance, draw no bet, totals, handicaps and both teams to score all go on regular time, stoppage time included.
So yes, a goal in the 94th minute counts. As far as your bet is concerned, stoppage time is part of the 90.
Extra time and penalties don't count for any of those. Knockout game, 1-1 after 90 minutes? That's a draw on the 1x2, whoever goes through.
Half markets only look at their own half. Bet on the first half and it's settled when the halftime whistle goes.
The markets that do take extra time and penalties into account are the ones about who goes through or who lifts the trophy, and they'll say so in the name. Read the market title before you bet. That's where the rule is.
Here's a real one. On 17 October, our Premier League board had Everton against Chelsea at 3.05, 3.75 and 2.20 on the 1x2. Those imply 32.8%, 26.7% and 45.5%, which comes to 104.9%, so the margin on that match was about 4.9%. Notice the draw at 3.75. It's a proper outcome you can back, and one more reason the 90-minute rule matters. For the full version of that check, see our guide to the vig.

Common questions
How long is a soccer game?
Ninety minutes of play over two 45-minute halves. Add stoppage time and a halftime of up to 15 minutes, and a pro match runs to nearly two hours.
How long is halftime in soccer?
Up to 15 minutes. That's the limit in the Laws of the Game, and at the top level they tend to take almost all of it.
How many minutes are in a soccer game?
Ninety, and then whatever stoppage time the referee decides each half needs. A knockout game that's still level gets 30 more in extra time.
Does extra time count in soccer betting?
Not for standard markets like the 1x2, totals or both teams to score. Those settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Extra time and penalties only count for markets about who goes through or who wins the trophy.
